At Alternative Health Associates we offer three different types of hair removal: Laser Hair Removal, Electrolysis, and Waxing. We have seven providers offering these services with a combination of 75+ years of experience! Now, to answer the question at hand, Electrolysis is the only FDA approved treatment for hair removal, Laser hair removal is a form of hair reduction up to 80-90% for most, and waxing is a non-permanent type of hair removal. Because Electrolysis is permanent, this treatment will last the longest, however, can require touch ups over time as the body ages and hormones change. Laser hair removal is also very successful in providing long lasting results and will also require occasional touch ups as the body changes. Waxing results will only last 1-2 weeks.
There are multiple variables to consider when choosing a treatment modality: hair color, skin color, hair thickness, area to receive hair removal, number of hairs being removed, and how large the treatment area is. Electrolysis can be used for any color of hair, all skin types/ colors, any thickness, and is typically used for smaller areas like the upper lip, chin, eyebrows, and neck. Electrolysis is the process of inserting a small probe into the hair follicle, zapping the root of the follicle which kills each hair follicle one at a time causing permanent hair removal, but can be tedious for larger areas with dense hair.
Laser hair removal is a very successful treatment for many people and can treat larger areas more efficiently, however there are some limitations to this treatment and may not work for everyone. Laser Hair Removal targets pigmented hair and is very efficient removing black, brown, and some lighter brown pigmented hair. The laser will not remove blonde, grey, or red pigmented hair. For those with blonde, grey, or red hair, Laser Hair Removal will not work and would need to do electrolysis. Our Candela Gentle Max Pro Laser offers both Alexandrite settings for hair removal on those with light colored skin and ND YAG settings for hair removal on those with darker colored skin.
